Overview

Living kidney donors (LKDs) donate one of their kidneys to a person with kidney failure and help save their lives. However, donating a kidney is associated with some risks and appropriate education, evaluation, care, and follow-up is needed to ensure optimal health and well-being of LKDs. Currently, long-term care of LKDs generally falls on the shoulders of family physicians, such as yourself, and in our prior work we have identified several challenges that family physicians face when helping with the evaluation of those interested in donating a kidney or caring for LKDs. LKDs have also mentioned several deficiencies in their care delivery particularly with respect to communication between transplant teams and family physicians.

We now aim to identify and develop strategies to address the previously identified concerns of LKDs and family physicians. Our broad goal is to integrate the perspectives of LKDs, family physicians and transplant healthcare professionals to develop the appropriate tools and resources that can help improve the experiences, care, and outcomes of LKDs.

Participant Commitment

Participants will be invited to a 40-60 minute online interview. We will first present to you the data from our prior work and then discuss and brainstorm ways to address the issues identified. The meeting will be conducted over Zoom at a time that is most convenient for you. We will ask several prompting questions about models of care for LKDs and living kidney transplantation. If agreement needed, is not reached, awe may contact you for a second round of deliberation interviews may be organized where we will request your participation to discuss the themes and strategies identified by other stakeholders during their focus groups. You may choose to only participate in one interview.
